A 20-year-old woman from Cachar allegedly died by suicide after an obscene video of her went viral, allegedly shared by her boyfriend.
According to reports, the tragic incident took place on Wednesday, February 12, in Lalang Part III, Moragang village, under the Lakhipur police station, Cachar.
According to sources, the video surfaced on Tuesday night and quickly spread, which left the young woman overwhelmed with shame. She was unable to bear the humiliation. So, she reportedly took the extreme step the following morning. Her family discovered her hanging body in the bathroom and immediately alerted the police.
Lakhipur police reached the spot, conducted a preliminary investigation, and sent the body for post-mortem to Silchar Medical College Hospital. Her funeral was held later that night.
Accusations Against the Boyfriend
Following the incident, the deceased’s mother has filed a complaint against Shahid Afridi Mazumder, a youth from Singerband who is currently working in Saudi Arabia. The victim’s family alleges that Shahid, who was in a relationship with the woman, leaked the private video from a Saudi phone number.
Her father stated that the viral video left his daughter humiliated and devastated, forcing her to take such a drastic step. He emphasized that her reputation was destroyed in the village, making it impossible for her to cope with the shame.
Witnesses Speak Out on Cachar tragic incident
A neighbor expressed outrage over the incident, saying:
“The girl hanged herself because her private moments were leaked by her boyfriend, when they was in relationship. He shared the videos and photos with people in our village, and on Tuesday night, they spread rapidly. On Wednesday morning her family recovered the hanging dead body of the girl. People of our village also received her objectionable images. Her respect and dignity have been violated and that is why she killed herself.”
A cousin of the deceased also recalled receiving a chilling call from the accused before the incident:
” Shahid had reached out to me to say that your sister is going to kill herself. Go and see her. I tried reaching out to her and her friends, but everyone’s phone was silent. By the time, I could make it to her home, she was already gone.”
Demands for Justice
Following the incident, family members and locals have demanded strict action against the accused. They are urging the district police to take immediate steps to extradite and arrest Shahid Afridi Mazumder under Indian law.
