The Government-Led telecom company Bharat Sanchar Nigam Limited (commonly known as BSNL) has announced new features known as Voice over Wi-Fi (VoWiFi) calling. This new feature allows the BSNL users to make voice calls without network coverage, using Vo-WiFi.
This feature will allow the people of backward places where signals low, to make voice call. This launch brings BSNL on par with leading private telecom operators such as Jio, Airtel, and Vodafone-Idea, who already offer similar Wi-Fi calling services to their customers.
BSNL Expands 4G Network Nationwide
As part of its 25th-anniversary celebration, BSNL has rapidly expanding its 4G services across India. The company has already installed over 1 lakh mobile towers and plans to add nearly 97,500 more to strengthen its nationwide network.
The VoWiFi service soft-launched on October 2 by Neeraj Mittal, Secretary of the Department of Telecommunications (DoT). Currently, the feature is available in South and West Zone circles. Currently BSNLplanning to expand it to other regions in the coming months.
BSNL has also rolled out 4G and eSIM services in Mumbai. After the successful eSIM launch in Tamil Nadu earlier this year.
How Does VoWiFi Work?
The VoWiFi (Voice over Wi-Fi) service enables users to make high-quality voice calls using a Wi-Fi or home broadband connection, especially in areas with weak or no mobile signal. This is particularly useful for users living in indoor or remote zones where cellular connectivity is limited.
To use this feature, users need a smartphone that supports VoWiFi. Most modern Android and iPhone devices include this option under the mobile network settings.
