A tragic stampede at the Sri Venkateswara Swamy Temple in Kasibugga, Srikakulam district of Andhra Pradesh, claimed the lives of at least nine devotees, most of them women and children, early on Saturday morning. The incident occurred during heavy crowding on the occasion of Ekadashi, an auspicious day for Hindus that draws large gatherings to temples across the state.

Chaos and Panic at the Temple

Eyewitness videos circulating online show horrific scenes of overcrowding, with hundreds of devotees—mostly women carrying puja baskets—struggling to move on a narrow staircase. The situation quickly turned chaotic as people jostled to save themselves, leading to multiple injuries and deaths. Several bodies were later seen lying across the temple premises, while rescue workers and volunteers tried to revive those who had fallen unconscious.

Rescue and Relief Efforts

Police and emergency responders rushed to the scene and brought the situation under control. Several injured devotees were taken to nearby hospitals, where medical teams are providing urgent treatment.

Officials Confirm Death Toll

Governor S. Abdul Nazeer confirmed that nine people had died in the stampede. Expressing deep sorrow, he directed the district administration to ensure the best possible medical care for the injured and extended condolences to the bereaved families.

CM Chandrababu Naidu Expresses Grief

Chief Minister N. Chandrababu Naidu expressed shock over the tragedy, calling the deaths “heartbreaking.”

“The stampede at the Venkateswara Temple in Srikakulam district has caused immense grief. I extend my deepest condolences to the families of the deceased and have instructed officials to provide prompt medical assistance to the injured,” Naidu said in a statement.

He also urged local authorities and public representatives to visit the temple and oversee relief operations personally.

Minister Nara Lokesh Reacts

Minister Nara Lokesh, son of the Chief Minister, also expressed profound grief over the incident.

“A deep sorrow has gripped us on this Ekadashi day. I extend my heartfelt condolences to the families of those who lost their lives. The government is ensuring proper medical care for the injured,” Lokesh said.

Authorities have launched an inquiry to determine the exact cause of the stampede and to prevent such tragedies in the future.
