Renowned Assamese flutist Dipak Sarma, celebrated for the magical melodies of his flute, passed away early this morning at around 6:15 AM in a Chennai hospital.

The veteran musician had been critically ill and was undergoing treatment at a Guwahati hospital last month before being shifted to Chennai for better medical care.

Born in Panigaon village of Nalbari district, Dipak Sarma was revered across Assam for his soulful performances and lifelong dedication to music. Despite earning accolades and admiration from music lovers, his final days were marked by severe financial hardship.

In October 2025, Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma had announced a financial assistance of ₹5 lakh to support the ailing artiste during his treatment.

His passing marks the end of an era in Assam’s musical heritage, leaving behind a legacy that will continue to inspire generations of musicians.

Assam CM shares condolence, “Deeply anguished to learn about the untimely demise of eminent flutist Dipak Sarma, who has contributed immensely towards Assamese music and popularised flute as a musical instrument. My sincere condolences to the bereaved family members and well-wishers. Om Shanti”
