The Chief Electoral Officer of Assam, Anurag Goel announced that the final voter list for upcoming by-election in five assembly will be released on August 8.
During the press conference on July 19, Friday, chief electoral officer detailed the schedule and preparations for the by-election in the Dholai (SC), Sidli (ST), Bongaigaon, Behali, and Samaguri constituencies.
Goel said that the Election Commission has stared preparations for the by-elections. The by-election needs to happen within six months of the Lok Sabha election results. He also highlighted that these elections would be based on the pre-delimitation status of the constituency.
The recent Lok Sabha election was the first after a controversial boundary redraw in Assam, which criticized by opposition parties as biased towards the ruling BJP. The election department will sent draft electoral rolls of the pre-delimitation constituencies with recognized political parties on Saturday for feedback by July 27.
The draft voter list will be published on July 30 for public. After that public can submit claims and objection with August 10.
After processing submission by August 19, the Assam By-Election Final Voter List list will be published on August 20, according to Chief electoral Goel.
By-elections for five Assembly seats in Assam will be held based on the pre-delimitation constituencies, as per Election Commission of India (ECI) rules. The delimitation in Assam last year did not change the number of Parliamentary and Assembly constituency, which remained at 14 and 126 respectively. But it did adjust their areas and boundaries.
