6 Countries Issue Travel Advisories for Assam & Northeast Amid Security Concerns

Six Countries including UK, USA has issue travel advisory to restrict their citizen to travel Assam and other Northeast State of India. This decision was made considering the law-and-order situation in the Northeast, including Assam.

This information of Restriction was revealed by Assam Tourism Minister Ranjeet Kumar Dass on Tuesday in the state assembly, while responding to a question raised by Congress MLA Rakibuddin Ahmed.

Name of the Countries who restrict travel to Assam and Northeast state of India

The countries who issue travel advisory to travel Assam & other Northeast State of India are, UK, USA, Australia, New Zealand, Canada, and Switzerland.

Assam Tourism Minister said that the Tourism Department, on behalf of the state government, is in touch with the Ministry of External Affairs to convince these countries to remove the restrictions.

Why did the Countries Restrict travel to Assam and Northeast India?

The minister said these six countries issued the advisory due to law-and-order situation in the region. It applies to Assam and other northeastern states. He also mentioned that a high-level team from Australia recently visited Assam to review the situation.

He also further stated that number of tourists visiting in Assam is decreasing. In 2022-23 fiscal year the tourist number was 98,31,141 which has dropped to 70,67,335 in 2023-24 fiscal year. In 2024-25 (till January) the number of tourists is 67,88,565.

Assam Tea Tourism Scheme

Assam Tourism Minister stated that the state government launched the ‘Promotion and Development of Tea Tourism Infrastructure in Assam’ scheme in 2022-23 to boost tea tourism.

Under this scheme selected tea gardens will receive a ₹2 crore grant to enhance tourism potential and restore heritage bungalows.

A total of 22 tea gardens selected in the first phase of the scheme. 34 tea garden in second phase.
