Waqf Bill 2025 has become law on April 5 after it get the assent of President Droupadi Murmu. The bill has passed by Rajya Sabha on Friday early morning and Lok Sabha passed the bill on Thursday.

In Rajya Sabha it passed after 17 hours long debate by getting 128 vote in favour and 95 vote against. Lok Sabha passed the bill after 13 hours long marathon debate by getting 288 vote in favour and 232 vote against it.

Prime Minister hailed the development as a “watershed moment” for India. He said the new law would bring more transparency, support fair growth, and help uplift marginalised communities who have not had enough chances or representation in the past.

Taking to social media X he stated, “The enactment of the Waqf (Amendment) Bill and the Mussalman Wakf (Repeal) Bill marks a turning point in our journey toward socio-economic justice. These reforms will empower those who have been kept at the periphery of progress.”

As expected, there was a heated debate over the Bill between the Centre and the Opposition in both the Lok Sabha and Rajya Sabha. Union Minister Kiren Rijiju presented the Bill in both Houses and said it does not harm or take away the rights of any community. However, the Opposition argued that the Bill was “unconstitutional” and “against Muslims.”

The Waqf Bill, 2025, introduced to solve the problem in the management and governance of Waqf properties. Its aims is to make the rules easier to understand, involve more people in decisions and use Waqf properties in a better way.

Waqf Bill is the update version of Waqf Act, 1995.
