Violence Erupt at Katigorah Polling Station, Cachar: Five injured

A violent altercation erupted at Polling Station No. 2 in Katigorah, Cachar, during the ongoing Panchayat election across 14 district of Assam on May 2. The incident, occurred under the jurisdiction of Fulbari-Tarinipur Gaon Panchayat, has raised serious concerns about election security.

According to several reports, a group of individual forcefully entered the polling station to seize control, causing immediate chaos. This chaos turned into violent clash, as the group began assaulting others present at the station. Election official promptly halt voting for an hour.

Five people injured in this clash. The injured people were taken to Silchar Medical College and Hospital for treatment. Security forces were deployed to secure the area, ensuring the safety of voters and election staff. The situation has since been brought under control, and voting has resumed under strict security measures to prevent further disruptions.

The District Administration has not yet released an official statement regarding the allegations of ignored warnings and security issues.

The SP of Cachar clarified, saying, “This was a dispute between two groups of candidates and their supporters. It was not related to the polling station itself but was a result of a disagreement between them. The fight started among the polling agents, and we quickly sent in forces to handle the situation. The Officer-in-Charge (OC) has also arrived to manage the situation and make sure voting can continue smoothly.”
