Assam CM Himanta Biswa Sarma announced that market of Silchar, Guwahati and Dibrugarh to remain open 24×7 without any holiday. This decision took during cabinet meeting on March 20, which aims to boost the earnings of small business.

Speaking to media, Assam CM stated that shops in these three municipal corporations will operate round the clock, every day of the week.

Assam CM Himanta Biswa Sarma stated in X, “Now shops can operate 24×7 in Guwahati, Dibrugarh and Silchar and with extended timings in other areas without compromising on worker rights and conveniences! P.S- This decision is not applicable for liquor shops and bars.”

To ensure smooth functioning, businesses must follow a three-shift system, with each shift lasting eight hours and different employees working in each shift.

The decision taken in aims to modernize the state’s economy abd will boost business, job creation and align with global business and labour trends.

The key details of the 24×7 Silchar, Guwahati, Dibrugarh market open decision are

  • Cabinet has approved operation of shops and establishments on 24/7 basis in Guwahati, Dibrugarh and Silchar Municipal areas
  • Establishments in Municipal Areas or State Highways can remain open till 2:00 AM
  • Establishments in districts and minor roads other than Municipal Corporation Areas and National Highways can remain till 11:00 PM
  • This decision will modernize the state’s economy and will boost businesses, job creation, and align with global business and labour trends.
  • In carrying forward with this decision, no adult worker shall allowed to work for more than 48 hours in a week or 9 hours in a day
  • No worker shall asked to work continuously for more than 5 hours unless they have been given a break of not less than half an hour
  • Any work beyond 9 hours a day or 48 hours a week shall treat as overtime and the total number of overtime hours shall not exceed 125 hours in a period of 3 months.
  • All other safeguards to the workers available under the Act will continue to remain the same.

These decision will not be applicable for liquor shops and bar.
