The convict, Sanjay Roy of RG Kar Medical College and Hospital Rape and Murder case has sentenced to life imprisonment on January 20, 2025.
Today, Sealdah court at around 2:45 announced the life sentence to jail and Rs 50,000 fine for the convict of RG Kar Rape-Murder case Sanjay Roy, by stating the case was not the “rarest of rare crimes”.
Sanjay Roy has given the Sentence of Life Imprisonment after he found guilty of sexually assaulting the 31-year-old trainee doctor and throttling her to death on August 9, 2024. The court convicted him under Sections 64, 66, and 103(1) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS).
The Sealdah civil and criminal court, Kolkata also ordered the state to pay compensation of Rs 17 lakh to victim family, reported by PTI.

I think the investigations done by Kolkata Police were presented in front of the CBI and because of the the shortcomings in the investigation, the convict was sentenced to life imprisonment and not death penalty. The victim’s family and all of us are really sad. It is the insensitivity of the judges that such a huge case not called rarest of the rare cases,” reported in HT.
A junior doctor says, “We wanted a strict and exemplary punishment, this punishment is not enough… We will move to higher courts seeking a more strict judgement…” reported ANI. A group of Junior doctor also protest outside the Sealdah court.
What did CM Mamata Banerjee Stated on RG Kar cases?
On Sealdah court sentencing life imprisonment to the convict, Sanjay Roy, West Bengal CM Mamata Banerjee stated, “I learned about the sentencing from the media. We have always demanded capital punishment and we continue to stand by it. However, this is the court’s decision and I can’t say much about this. For three other cases, state police ensured capital punishment through thorough investigations, concluded within 54-60 days. This was a serious case. Had it been under our purview, we would have ensured the death penalty long back.”
On August 9, 2024 a trainee doctor has murdered and raped at RG Kar Medical College and Hospital, Kolkata. She was found dead in a seminar hall of the hospital in the early hours of the August 9, 2024. The next day Sanjay Roy the convict arrested in connection of crime. His Bluetooth earphone was fund near the victim’s dead body, in based of its Kolkata Police arrest him.
