About Veer Shambhudhan Phonglo

Legendary Veer Martyr Shambhudhan Phonglo was born in 16th March 1850 in a tiny village, Longkhor, located in Maibang (former Dimasa Kingdom), Assam. He was the son of Deprondao Phonglo and Kasaidi. Besides being a famous prophet, he was also a producer of herbal medicines.
A fearless warrior and a revered leader of the Dimasa community, Veer Sambhudhan Phonglo led a valiant resistance against British colonial rule in the 19th century. His unwavering spirit and sacrifice symbolize the immortal courage of the indigenous people in their struggle for freedom and dignity.
He inspired the youth to recover the past golden era of the Dimasa Kingdom by overthrowing British colonial rule. With deep love for his land and people, he organized a rebellion against British oppression, inspiring generations with his bravery. He led his subjects and troops against C.A. Soppit in January 1882 and defeated them.
In retaliation, another force was promptly sent under Major Boyd (the then DC of Cachar), who was wounded and succumbed to death. Veer Sambhudhan persistently hounded by the British and eventually located his hideout at Egralung, adjacent to Kumbhirgram Airport, on 12th February 1883. There, he succumbed to death from severe injuries sustained in the encounter at the age of 33.
Though he was martyred, his legacy lives on in the hearts of those who cherish freedom and justice. “His fight was not just for a land but for the soul of his people.”
