Assam CM Himanta Biswa Sarma has announced that new applicants for Aadhaar card in Assam will be required to submit their NRC applicant receipt number, as a part of effort to crack down on illegal immigrants in the state.
While addressing a press conference in Guwahati on September 7, CM announced.
While speaking at a press conference CM Himanta Biswa Sarma stated, “Applications for Aadhaar cards are more than the population… It indicates that there are doubtful citizens and we have decided that new applicants will have to submit their NRC application receipt number,”
This will “stop the influx of illegal foreigners” and the state government will be ‘very strict” in issuing Aadhaar cards, he said.
“It will not be easy to get Aadhaar in Assam,” Himanta Biswa Sarma said.
Regards to the decision the Assam Government will issue a notification in the next 10 days stating that if one does not apply for NRC, they will not receive an Aadhaar Card in the new process.
This notification will not apply for the tea workers of the state. From October 1, the strict rule will be begin in other district for adult applicants.
CM also stated, โRegardless of whether the name was listed in the NRC, anyone who did not apply for NRC in 2014 is not a citizen of Assam. He said that the children who are small now will not be asked for the NRC application number, but the adult who will apply for Aadhaar card will have to provide the receipt number.
The new rule of Aadhaar Card will not be applicable for biometrics locked people
CM Himanta Biswa Sarma also stated that the NRC application receipt number will not be applicable for the 9.55 lakh people whose biometrics were locked during NRC process and they will get their AadhaarCard.
He also revealed that some districts of Assam, Aadhaar Card holders is more than the percentage of the population. For instance in Barpeta 103.74% of the population has the Aadhaar card. Dhubri 103.48% and Morigaon 101.76% and Nagaon 101% of the population has Aadhaar Card.
