Cachar Police on December 21, arrested Rais Uddin Barbhuiya in connection with a car accident in Raipur, Borkhola, Cachar. He has been arrested based on an FIR lodged by the family of his deceased wife, Helena Begum. The family accused Rais of orchestrating the accident and demanded his arrest. Acting on the complaint, Cachar Police took him into custody on Saturday morning.
The Borkhola Car Accident incident occurred on December 17 in the Raipur area of Borkhola. Raisโs car plunged into the Barak River late at night while he was returning from Silchar with his wife and one-year-old daughter, Jannatara Begum. Somehow, Rais managed to escape the vehicle, his wife and daughter were trapped inside. After accident Cachar police went to the scene with SDRF team. On the accident night the SDRF team were unsuccessful to locate the submerged car. The vehicle was ultimately discovered the following morning by an untrained diver.
By the time when the car was retrieved on December 18, Helena Begum and her daughter died due to drowning. Rais Uddin, who managed to escape from the vehicle during the incident have injured and was taken to Silchar Medical College and Hospital for treatment. However, suspicions surrounding the circumstances of the accident prompted the police to investigate further to rule out any foul play.
Cachar SP Numal Mahatta expressed concerns about the nature of the incident. The case gained further attention when Assam DGP GP Singh directed SP Mahatta to conduct a thorough investigation, deepening suspicions. Locals at the scene also questioned Raisโs decision to take a narrow, gravel-filled road.
Helena Begumโs family formally lodged an FIR with Cachar Police, accusing Rais of planning the accident and alleging that he murdered their daughter and her daughter child. Following the FIR, SP Numal Mahatta confirmed Rais Uddinโs arrest to media on Saturday morning. Rais is currently in police custody and is being interrogated as investigations continue.
