10-month-old detected with HMPV Virus Positive, first case in Assam in 2025

A 10-month-old child tested positive of HMPV virus in Assam Medical College Hospital in Dibrugarh, the first HMPV positive in 2025, an officials said on Saturday.
According to officials, the infant admitted to AMCH, Dibrugarh four days ago for a cold and later the child positive for HMPV.ย However there is nothing to worry, as the child is in stable condition.

What did AMCH Superintendent said about the infant of HMPV Virus positive in Assam.

AMCH Superintendent Dr. Dhrubajyoti Bhuyan assured the public that the childโ€™s condition is stable and there is no reason to worry. He stated, โ€œThe child was admitted with a cold and subsequent tests confirmed HMPV. However, the baby is stable and under proper care.โ€

The child found positive during a routine checkup at the Regional VRDL laboratory of ICMR-RMRC in Dibrugarh.

Dr.ย Biswajit Borkakoty, Senior Scientist at the ICMR Regional Medical Research Centre in Lahowal, noted that HMPV cases have been reported in the region since 2014.ย 

He said, โ€œWe have identified 110 HMPV cases in Dibrugarh since 2014.ย This is the first case this season. The virus reappears annually, so itโ€™s not unexpected.โ€

HMPV Cases in India

Since January 7, at least 10 HMPV cases have confirmed across India.ย The first cases were reported in Karnataka’s Bengaluru and Tamil Nadu, followed by a case in Gujarat on the same day. Two more cases were later identified in Nagpur, Maharashtra. On Wednesday, Mumbai reported another case, and Ahmedabad confirmed one more on Thursday.

Health officials have shared that the 11 HMPV cases this season include two in Bengaluru, one in Gujarat, two in Chennai, three in Kolkata, two in Nagpur and one in Mumbai.
HMPV infections arenโ€™t new to India, as some cases were reported back in December as well.

Union Health Minister JP Nadda addressed the issue, stating that HMPV is not a new virus.ย โ€œThe virus was first identified in 2001 and has been circulating globally for years,โ€ he explained.

HMPV Virus, known as Human Metapneumovirus, which usually cause symptoms similar to the common cold.ย According to the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), HMPV commonly causes respiratory infections, particularly in young children and older adults.

The Indian Health authorities are monitoring the situation closely, but experts emphasize that these infections are part of a recurring seasonal trend.
