Heavy Rainfall in Assam: IMD Issues Red and Yellow Alerts for various district

The Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued Red alert and yellow for extremely heavy rainfall in Assam during 17th-20th June, 2024.

Many of the district of Assam is under Red Alert are Kokrajhar, Chirang, Goalpara, Kokrajhar, Baksha, Nalbari, Bongaigaon, Barpeta, Dimahaso till 19 June, 2024.  

Cachar is on Red alert on 18 June and Yellow alert till 20 June where heavy to heavy rainfall will took place. So, Silchar is on Red Alert.

River Water level of Brahmaputra, and its Tributaries is rising due continuous heavy rainfall that took place over the past few days. The Barak River level also rising but it is now below the danger level.

IMD Alert heavy rainfall for Northeastern state

The IMD has given state wise weather warning for Northeast states. Meghalaya, Arunachal Pradesh and Assam is under red alert within 18-19 June, 2024. Tripura, Manipur, Nagaland and Mizoram is on Orange alert till 18-19 June, 2024.

Assam Flood 2024

Earlier, Cyclone Remal has hit many areas of India where heavy rainfall took place. On 28 May, 2024 because of heavy rainfall the Longai river overflowed. An embankments at the Longai river in Isaganj village has also suffered damage due heavy rainfall in Karimganj district. The water level of Longai and Singla river has crossed the danger level and water in overflowing and entering the village area of Patharkandi, Karimganj where the flooding situation rises. About two hundred villages facing the threat of flooding.

In this time, Cachar, Karimganj, Nogaon, Hojai, and Hailakandi has affected very much. According to Assam State Disaster Management Authority a total of 6,01,642 people affected by the flood. They also report that around 386 villages affected by the flood. In Cachar alone 1,12,265 people affected, Hojai 1,26,813 people affected and Nogaon hit the worst as 2,79,345 people affected alone.

The ten district of Assam which are affected by the flood area Hailakandi, Cachar, Karimganj, Hojai, Nagaon, Dibrugarh, Karbi Anglong West, Dima-Haso,Morigaon and Golaghat. In Silchar 62,246 people are affected, Lakhipur 743, Udharbond 2628, Katigorah 32095, Sonai 14553 people affected.

Many people also died in the flood.
