Crime Investigation Department (CID) and Assam Police has arrested nine people in the connection of ongoing marksheet scam in Gauhati University, Assam. Authorities has revealed that in the exchange of money studentsโ marks were increasing illegally at Gauhati University.
The Marksheet scam came into light after when a forged marksheet of Azizul Haque a six-semester undergraduate student of Ganeshlal Chaudhary College in Barpeta, detect.
Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma on Thursday highlights the situation addressing the issue in Barpeta. He highlights serious concerns about the incident. According to CM, some individuals are managing the computerized marksheet system at Gauhati University to increased marks for some students in exchange of money.
He also said that the scam discovered when forged marks were found for Azizul Haque, a sixth-year undergraduate student at Ganeshlal Chaudhary College (GCL College) in Barpeta Road. CM Himanta Biswa Sarma confirmed that the Assam Police and CID are jointly investigating the matter.
A case has quickly filed against the scam in the Barpeta Road Police Station, the initial investigation is going on. The investigation leads eight accused arrested on June 29, 2024.
The local media played a crucial role in the matter by informing the Chief Minister about the mishandling the investigation. As a result, CM ordered a thorough investigation into the matter. This investigation revealed that several university and college staff also involved in the scam.

A case has filed against the accused who are involve in the scam under various section of the Indian Penal Code. It also expected there will be additional arrest. Police said that the investigation is going into the matter.
The university’s student union said, “The whole scam is being run from Gauhati University. Employees from different departments are involved. They are increasing students’ marks in exchange for money under the guise of mark sheet evaluation.โ
They also claimed that clearing a backlog in one subject costs Rs 16,000, while clearing backlogs in four subjects costs Rs 1 lakh. There is said to be a network of intermediaries at every institution under Gauhati University, with some students also involved in the scam
