A team of Directorate of Vigilance & Anti-Corruption, Assam, has launched a sting operation to trap official who accept bribe. In this sting operation Directorate of Vigilance & Anti-Corruption successfully arrested Abhijit Kar, a Field Surveyor of the Silchar Development Authority Office. He was caught red handed when he was accepting a bribe of Rs. 15,000 from a complainant, for No Objection Certificate (NOC) for house construction regularization.

Complaint lodged against Field Surveyor of Silchar to Decisive Action

The arrest came after a complaint lodged against Abijit Kar, accusing him of demanding a Rs. 1,00,000 bribe for issuing the NOC. Choosing to stand against corruption, the complainant reported the matter, prompting the vigilance team to take swift action.

Operation Details

Undercover officers of the Vigilance Directorate, on the day of the operation, strategically positioned themselves within the premises of the Silchar Development Authority in Cachar district. The moment when Abhijit Kar accepted the partial bribe amount, he was detained.

Evidence and Seizures

Following his apprehension, officials conducted a thorough search, Rs. 38,500 has been recovered from the official pocket. In addition Rs. 12,60,890 has been recovered from his residence in Silchar town of Cachar district, Assam. The total amount recovered from the arrested person is Rs. 12,99,390. All seized money was documented in the presence of neutral witnesses, bolstering the case against Kar.

Legal Proceedings Initiated

A case was registered against Abhijit Kar on March 5, 2024, under Section 7(a) of the Prevention of Corruption Act, 1988 (amended in 2018), marking a significant step towards legal action. The evidence gathered has led to Kar’s arrest, with further legal proceedings aimed at addressing this corrupt act underway.

Manjul Deb, the chairman of the Silchar Development Authority, has reacted on the arrest of the official. He is very thankful for the work of the vigilance team who caught Abhijit Kar, a worker at the Authority, for taking a bribe. Deb praised the team for their hard work in fighting corruption and said he supports their mission to keep society honest.

Manjul Deb also promised to help the vigilance team whenever they need it. And also talked about how important it is to punish people who are corrupt. He is glad that a corrupt person was caught in his own department and wants to make sure it does not happen again.
