The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued an alert for Remal cyclone on Friday (24 May) that could impact West Bengal and Bangladesh in the next couple days. Today IMD issue orange alert for light to moderate rainfall in Kolkata, Naida, Howrah, Jhagram, North24 Parganas, South 24 Parganas and Pruba Medinipur dictricts.
Heavy rainfall lashed in different part of West Bengal. On Thursday, IMD issued an yellow or watch alert for several districts of West Bengal. They issued red alert for fisher man in the state for a day.
The IMD advised the fisher man not to venture into south Bay of Bengal and Andaman Sea till 24th May, Central Bay of Bengal till 26th May and North Bay of Bengal from 25th till 27th May. They also advised the fisher to return who are till on sea.
IMD Alert on Cyclone
The IMD said in its bulletin about Cyclone Alert, โThe well marked low pressure area over westcentral & Adjoining South Bay of Bengal moved northeastwards during past 12 hours, concentrated depression and Lay centred at 5.30am of today, the 24th may, 2024 over central Bay of Bengal about 800 Km South-Southeast of Kehpupara (Bangladesh) and 810 Km South of Canning (West Bengal).
It is very likely to continue to move northeastwards and intensify further into a cyclonic storm over east central Bay of Bengal of 25th May. Subsequently, it would move nearly northwards, intensify into a severe cyclonic storm by 1800 UTC of 25th May. Continuing to move northward, it is very likely to cross Bangladesh and adjoining West Bengal coasts between Sagar Island and Khepupara on 26th May as a severe cyclonic storm.โ
