Cachar Police have arrested three people for attacking Dr. Subhash Debnath, an assistant professor at Gurucharan College (GC), Silchar after he strictly enforced anti-cheating rules during Class 12 board exams at JR Higher Secondary School in Ganirgram.
The attack took place on March 11, when Dr. Subhash Debnath was returning home. Two students on a motorbike without a number plate tried to hit him on the head with a bamboo stick. He somehow managed to dodged the blow, but it hit his hand, crushing his fingers. Locals helped him reach the police station, where he filed a complaint.
Dr. Subhash Debnath is assistance professor of Chemistry of Gurucharan College. In the HS Exam he was working as an external invigilator at JR HS School, where he and another official ensured students did not cheat. On the last day of exams, they tightened monitoring, angering some students. Earlier, Dr. Debnath had expelled four students caught with over 50 cheating slips each.
The arrested students are Imdad Ullah Barbhuya (19) from Buribail Pt-II, Borkhola, and Billal Ahmed Barbhuya (18) from Dudhpur Pt-I, Katigorah. Police also arrested Hanif Alom Mazarbhuya (39), a Junior Assistant at JR HS School, for allegedly encouraging the attack. The bike used in the assault has been seized.
Cachar SP Numal Mahatta confirmed, “The two students, who were previously expelled for cheating, admitted to attacking Dr. Subhash Debnath in revenge. We also arrested Hanif Alom Mazarbhuya, who incited them. All three will be presented in court on March 14.”
This incident highlights ongoing cheating issues in board exams. JR Higher Secondary School was also involved in a cheating scandal in 2023, where students received answer chits in gunny bags during the Class 10 SEBA exams, leading to the cancellation of the first test.
