Second case of Guillain-Barre Syndrome (GBS) detected at Apollo Hospital in Guwahati, Assam. A 17-year-old girl currently receiving critical care at the Apollo Hospital, Guwahati, an official state on Sunday.
The incident come just after first case of GBS, on Friday, where a 17 years old Afia Zeenat died during treatment at Pratiksha Hospital in Guwahati.
According to reports, the teenage patient admitted to Apollo Hospital on January 19, after experiencing sudden weakness in her limbs and slurred speech within a day. Medical superintendent of Apollo Hospitals, Guwahati, “Following a thorough clinical evaluation and diagnostic investigations, including a CT scan, nerve conduction test (NCT), and Cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) analysis, doctors confirmed a diagnosis of Guillain-Barrรฉ Syndrome.”
Due to the severity of her condition, she was moved to the ICU and placed on a ventilator. She received intravenous immunoglobulin (IVIG) therapy and broad-spectrum antibiotics. Although doctors confirmed on Sunday that she was stable, she had to undergo a tracheostomy because of ongoing breathing difficulties.
Dr Das added, “She continues to experience quadriparesis (weakness in all four limbs) and persistent fever, necessitating broad-spectrum antibiotics, antifungal therapy, and other supportive medications under close ICU monitoring.โ
Meanwhile, the state health department is closely watching the situation. Officials visited Pratiksha Hospital, Assam where another patient with the Guillain-Barre Syndrome passed away before she could be moved to Delhi for advanced treatment. Her body has been taken to her family in Biharโs Kishanganj district.
A senior health official reassured the public that while awareness has increased due to a recent outbreak in Pune, there is no need to panic. “The condition is rare, with about one case per lakh population each year. It is more of an immune system reaction rather than an infection,” the official explained.
