Indian Railway Catering and Tourism Corporation Ltd. (IRCTC) provides optional insurance for those who book their e-tickets through the NGeT website application only. We have many doubts about whether clicking on the insurance option when booking a ticket for 45 paisa gives rail passenger any benefits.

Recently, a train accident took place in West Bengal where, a Goods carrying train rammed into Sealdah-bound Kanchanjunga Express. In this accident at least 15 people died and 20-25 injured. So, it is very important to have a insurance.

Letโ€™s, understand what is IRCTC insurance and what are the benefits of Rail Passenger?

IRCTC insurance is an optional insurance the rail passenger who book their e-ticket through NGeT Website Application only they get this benefits. Only citizen of India is eligible for this scheme. The applicant should apply for the scheme during booking their railway ticket through e-ticket.

However, if the option is exercised it will be compulsory for all passengers booked under one PNR number. Optional Travel Insurance facility is provided only for CNF/RAC/PartCNF ticket at the time of booking.

One Passenger just have to pay Rs.0.45 during booking ticket.

Benefits covered by the IRCTC Insurance of Rail Passenger

  • If any passenger died in any train accident or incident an amount of Rs.10 Lakh provided to the family or nominee of the passenger for financial support.
  • If any passenger injured and remain totally permanent disability in any train incident than amount of Rs.10 Lakh provided to the passenger who suffered this.
  • If any passenger who suffer Partial Permanent Disability in any train accident than amount of Rs.7.5 Lakh provided to the passenger.
  • If any passenger who injured hospitalized in any train accident than amount upto Rs.2 Lakh covers hospital expenses.
  • Helps cover the cost of transporting the deceased passenger’s remains to their home, offers amounts upto Rs.10,000 to the family during a difficult time.
  • In case of short termination of trains due to any reason, if the passenger opts for the alternate mode of transportation arranged by railway upto the destination station, then this part of the journey of the passenger shall also be covered under the policy taken by the passenger.
  • In case of diversion of train due to any reason, the coverage shall be for the diverted route.
  • In case of vikalp train, the policy obtained by the passenger for covering this journey in the original train shall be valid in the vikalp train also.
  • The coverage for Hospitalization Expenses for Injury is over and above the death/permanent total disability/partial disability

How can you Apply for the Insurance?

  • If any passenger wanted to apply for it, he/she has just to click on the insurance option when booking a ticket from your IRCTC account. After it passenger shall receive the policy information through SMS and on their registered email IDs directly from Insurance Companies along with the link for filling nomination details. However, Policy number can be viewed from Ticket booked history at IRCTC Page.
  • After the booking of ticket, the nomination details to be filled at respective Insurance Company site. If nomination details is not filled then the settlement shall be made with legal heirs, if the claim arises.
  • The coverage for the policy shall be for each passenger under the PNR in case of Death, Permanent Total Disability, Permanent Partial Disability, and Hospitalization Expenses for Injury and Transportation of mortal remains following Rail Accident or untoward incident.
  • The optional travel insurance will not be provided for the children below 5 years of age who book the ticket without berth/seat. The optional travel insurance will be provided for the children of 5-11 years of age who book the ticket with berth or without berth.
  • In case of passenger opting for insurance, the claim/liability shall be between insured and the Insurance Company.

Additionally

Train accident claims must be made within 4 months. If a person is injured or disabled in an accident and dies within 12 months, their family can claim a death benefit. Any disability benefits already paid will be adjusted against the death claim amount.

  •  If a passenger are stolen or robbed during train journey, then also anyone can claim compensation through this insurance.
  • Additionally, if you are delayed by 1-2 hours on premium trains like the Tejas Express, than a passenger can claim compensation through this insurance.
