APSC Scam: Former APSC Chairman Rakesh Paul Sentenced to 14 years Jail

Guwahati High Court judges delivered the verdict for convicts in the APSC scam case related to the appointment of Agriculture development officers (ADO) on Monday, July 29. A total of 32 people convicted in the cash-for-job scam.

As per information, the former APSC chairman Rakesh Paul has sentenced for 14 years in jail and Rs. 2 lakh fine. While Basanta Kumar Doley and Samedur Rahman has sentenced to 10 years in jail and Rs.50 thousand fine.

While other 29 accused have been sentenced to 4 years of jail and Rs.10,000 fine.

On July 22, 32 people, including former Assam Public Service Commission (APSC) chairman Rakesh Paul, were convicted in a case filed at Bhangagarh police station in 2017 under the Prevention of Corruption Act. A candidate has filed the case, who failed to qualify the job, alleging that marks of another candidate has increased in exchange for money. Based on the complained investigation started and now the accused arrested and court sentenced punishment.

  • Jayanta Jeet Das,
  • Dipankar Borik,
  • Raushan Roufi,
  • Pranjal Barman,
  • Shakeel Aziz Hoque,

They are convicted Bhangagarh P.S. Case No. 159/2017, which pertains to charges under Section 120(B)/420/468 of the Indian Penal Code (IPC) regarding irregularities in the ADO Examination conducted by the APSC.

Former APSC Chairman, Rakesh Kumar Paul, Basanta Kumar Doley, and Samedur Rahman convicted under Section 7/13(1)(a)(d)(iii)/13(2) of the Prevention of Corruption Act.

 There were 44 accused in the case, but the court acquitted 11 others due to lack of documented evidence.
