Silchar NIT Student Committed Suicide At Campus

On 6 May, a student of National Institute of Technology (NIT) Silchar commited suicide. This is the second case in a year. Earlier, last year on September month a suicide case reported in NIT Silchar.

According to reports, on that day he was with his parents in guest room. When his parents stepped out for some work he locked himself in the bathroom. When they found the long stayed of the victim inside the bathroom this feels them suspicious and they called for help.

After which the other student along with the NIT Silchar Authorities came into the scene. They soon managed to broke the bathroom door, and found him hanging.

They took him immediately to Silchar Medical College and Hospital where the doctor declared him brought dead.

The Student identified as Kishor Pran Deka a residents of Guwahati, Assam. He was a student of 6th Semester of Mechanical Branch in NIT, Silchar.

SP Cachar, Numal Mahatta, in a press statement, said that around 12:00 PM, they received information about a suicide case at NIT, Guest House Room No 04. The police team quickly went there and found that a 20-year-old NIT student named Kishor Pran Deka from Borka PS-Tamulpur, Kamrup (R) had hanged himself in the bathroom. They informed the local Executive Magistrate and conducted an initial investigation. They discovered that the student was suffering from severe depression, and his parents were staying with him. Unfortunately, he took his own life during their stay. The dead body sent to SMCH, Silchar for postmortem, and legal proceedings have started. The situation is now calm and being closely monitored.

He also added, โ€œone of the reasons behind his mental health struggles was his reluctance to pursue engineering. His parents visited the campus for this reason. They met with the departmental head yesterday to try to persuade him to continue with the course. Unfortunately, the parents didn’t fully understand their son’s perspective.โ€

Bhaskar Gupta, the Principal and Chief Superintendent of Silchar Medical College, stated that the student brought to their casualty ward around 11 AM, where he found to have already passed away. The NIT Silchar authorities had brought him to the hospital. Upon confirming his death, they followed proper procedures and informed the Cachar Police. When the police and magistrate arrived, the dead body transferred to the forensics department for postmortem examination before being returned to the family. Top of Form

Internal sources at the college revealed that the student took his life on the eve of an exam. Kesar Pran Deka, a resident of Changsari near Guwahati, had an end-semester exam scheduled for 4 PM that day. NIT Silchar authorities have yet to release an official statement, but there are growing calls for comprehensive reforms to address mental health issues in academic institutions, as the campus mourns the loss of another promising young person.
