Tripura state is undergoing through health crisis as 47 students from HIV positive and 828 have tested positive, according to reports.
According to TSACS senior officials, โWe have so far registered 828 students who are HIV positive. Out of them, 572 students are alive and we have lost 47 people to the HIV infection. Many of the students have migrated to out of Tripura for higher studies in coveted institution across the country.โ
The Tripura AIDS Control Society has identified the HIV tested positive students at 220 schools and 24 colleges and University who take injectable drugs. Not only this the TSACS officials said that recent data shows that almost every day 5 to 7 new cases of HIV detected.
The total number of active case during May 2024 is 8,729 people which registered at ART (Antiretroviral Therapy) centers. The total number of people who alive with HIV are 5,674. Among the HIV infected people 4,570 are male and rest are all females. Only one patient is a transgender.
Addressing a media workshop organized by Tripura Journalist Union jointly by Web Media Forum and TSACS, the Joint Director of TSACS shared a statistical presentation of HIV Positive in Tripura.
While Addressing the workshop Joint Director of TSACS said, โSo far, 220 schools and 24 colleges and universities have been identified where students are found to be addicted to intervenous drug abuse. We have collected the data from a total of 164 health facilities across the state. Reports are collected from almost all the blocks and subdivisions before making this presentation.”
Another senior officials of TSACS Bhattacharjee said, “In many cases, children from well-off families have tested positive for HIV. Some families have both parents working in government jobs and readily meet their children’s demands. They only realize too late that their children have become victims of drugs.โ
What is HIV?
HIV or Human Immunodeficiency Virus is a virus which affects the immune system of a body. The HIC specially targets the CD4 cells (T cells) which help the immune system to fight off infection. If HIV is not treated in early stage, then it can lead to the disease known as AIDS (Acquired Immunodeficiency Syndrome), where immunity system becomes severely weakened making the body more likely to get infections and certain types of cancer.

The person who are infected by HIV or Human Immunodeficiency Virus they are called HIV positive.
How did HIV Spreads?
HIV mainly spread through sex with some HIV positive people without protected. It can also spread sharing needles or syringes used by HIV infected. It is also possible to spread the virus through breastfeeding by infected mother to baby during child birth.
