Details

Ratha Yatra is a truly special time for devotees — a rare chance to see and feel the presence of the divine. On this day, three deities worshipped: Lord Balabhadra, the elder brother of Lord Jagannath; Goddess Subhadra, their sister; and Lord Jagannath himself.

The highlight of the festival is when all three deities are taken out of the temple and onto the streets of Puri, so that everyone — not just temple-goers — can have their darshan and receive blessings. Each deity rides in a massive, beautifully decorated chariot:

  • Lord Balabhadra’s has 16 wheels,
  • Subhadra’s has 14 wheels, and
  • Lord Jagannath’s has 18 wheels.

The Jagannath Temple in Puri, where it all begins, is one of the most sacred places in India, and this festival brings its spiritual energy right to the people.

Ritual of Rath Yatra

Ratha Yatra (Chariot Procession)

On the day of the yatra, the three deities placed on their grand chariots and pulled by thousands of devotees to the Gundicha Temple, which believed to be their aunt’s house. This is the most awaited event, full of chants, music, and devotion.

People also offered bhog like fruits, which will be given during Yatra.

Before the chariots start moving, the Gajapati King of Puri comes and sweeps the chariot platforms with a golden broom. This act shows that everyone is equal before God — even kings are His humble servants.

Stay at Gundicha Temple
The deities stay at the Gundicha Temple for nine days, where they worshipped just like in the main temple. This is why the yatra is also called Navadina Yatra (Nine-day journey).

Bahuda Yatra (Return Journey)
After their stay, the deities return to the Jagannath Temple in another procession, known as the Bahuda Yatra.
