Nikhita Gandhi had a concert at the Cochin University of Science and Technology (CUSAT) on Saturday. But this concert turned tragic. There was a stampede, which is when a lot of people try to move quickly in one place. This happened because it started raining suddenly, and everyone wanted to find shelter. Four students lost their lives in this accident, two girls and two boys. From them, three students are second-year engineering students. Sixty-four other people got hurt, and two of them are in really bad condition. The students who died were standing on the steps in front of the main gate to the auditorium. They fell down when crowd rushed to the venue forcing the gate open.
It is learned that people trampled those who fell from the steps. Which results four dead and others injured.
The accident took place around 7 pm at the open auditorium inside the CUSAT campus, Kerala. It took place minutes before Nikitaโs musical concert which was organized as part of Tech Fest at the campus.
Nikhita Gandhi Expresses Grief
Nikhita Gandhi, the singer, is very sad about what happened. She said she felt heartbroken and devastated by the tragic event. She expressed it in her Instagram account by saying, โHeartbroken & Devasted by what took place this evening in Kochi, Such an unfortunate incident took place before I could even leave for venue for the performance. No words possibly enough to express this profound grief. My prayers go out to the families of the students.โ
University’s Response
The Vice Chancellor of the university said the stampede took place when it started raining. โThe fest started yesterday. Various programmes have been arranged as part of the fest. Today there was a musical programme. Students from neighbouring colleges also attended the programme. Unfortunately, the crowd was huge. More than 2,000 people came inside and there was a rush at the stairs.โ
Police said the reason behind the incident was because there were was a mistake in how they managed the crowd. The Thrikkakkara police are looking into this carefully. They are talking to people who saw what happened to find out more details for their investigation.
