Former West Bengal CM Buddhadeb Bhattacharjee Passes Away

Former West Bengal CM Buddhadeb Bhattacharjee on August 8 passed away at his South Kolkata Residence in the morning. He was 80 years old.

He had unwell for some time, suffering from respiratory issues that often-required hospital visits. Last year, he was put on life support after getting pneumonia, but he recovered.

According Party officials, Buddhadeb Bhattacharjee passed away at around 8:30 am. He was survived b his wife Mira and daughter Suchetana.

Buddhadeb Bhattacharjee breathed his last at his two bedroom flat at Palm Avenue, South Kolkata, West Bengal. His organs will be donated for medical research as per his wished. His dead body will keep in the CPM Headquarters for his followers to pay respects. The last journey will take place tomorrow.

About Former West Bengal CM Buddhadeb Bhattacharjee

Buddhadeb Bhattacharjee served as Bengal Chief Minister from 2000 to 2011. He was also a former Member of CPMโ€™s top decision-making body, Politburo. Buddhadeb led the CPM into the 2011 state elections, where Mamata Banerjee’s Trinamool Congress won a historic victory, ending 34 years of Communist rule in the state.

He was a School teacher before joining politics full-time. He served as an MLA and a state minister before becoming Deputy Chief Minister. When Mr. Basu stepped down in 2000, he became Chief Minister and led the CPM to win Assembly elections in 2001 and 2006.

In 2015, he resigned from CPI (M) politburo and central committee. In the year 2018, he gave up his membership in the party’s State Secretariat.
