History of Kamakhya Ambubachi

Kamakhya, also known as Kameshvari, is the powerful goddess of desire and fertility, enshrined on the Nilachal Hills in Guwahati, Assam. She worshipped as the “Bleeding Goddess” because it is believed that her yoni (womb) fell here after Sati’s body was cut into pieces by Vishnu’s Sudarshan Chakra—making Kamakhya one of the 51 sacred Shakti Peeths, and one of the four Adi Shakti Peeths.

It is believed that during Ambubachi, the Goddess Kamakhya undergoes her annual menstrual cycle, symbolizing the power of fertility and the worship of the yoni (womb). Devotees consider this as a sacred expression of the divine feminine, and it reflects the belief that, like any woman, Maa Kamakhya also menstruates—once a year.

During these three sacred days, when the goddess is believed to be menstruating, the Kamakhya Temple remains closed to the public. This period is seen as a time of rest and purification for the goddess. However, secret rituals continue inside the Garbha Griha (sanctum sanctorum), performed only by the temple priests.

Once the three days are over, the temple gates reopen to the public, marking the official beginning of the Ambubachi Mela.

Ritual Of Ambubachi Mela

During the Ambubachi Mela, it is believed that Mother Earth becomes impure for three days, symbolizing the annual menstruation of Goddess Kamakhya. In alignment with this belief, devotees observe a period of seclusion and abstinence, much like how some traditionally practicing Hindu women observe rest during their menstrual cycles.

Throughout these three days, several activities are paused as a mark of respect and purification. Devotees refrain from cooking, performing daily worship, reading sacred scriptures, and even agricultural work.

On the fourth day, the goddess ceremonially bathed and purified. The statue representing her cleaned and the red pigment, which symbolizes the menstrual blood flowing from the goddess’s yoni (vaginal canal), respectfully washed away. Special rituals follow to restore her sanctity, marking the end of the seclusion and the joyful reopening of the temple to the public.
