On June 28, Friday morning a portion of roof collapse on cars which includes taxis at Terminal-1 pf New Delhi ’s Indira Gandhi International Airport (IGIA). In this incident at least one people died and five to eight other injured.
An official of Delhi Fire services said, “Around 5.30 am we receive a call regarding roof collapse at Terminal-1 of Delhi airport. Three Fire engines have rushed to the scene.”
He also said that after the roof sheet collapse the beams also collapsed which damaged cars parked in the pick-up and drop area. The injured person has been recued and taken to the hospital for treatment.
Delhi Airport compensation of Rs.20 Lakh to the family of the deceased, and Rs.3 Lakh each to those injured.
Delhi Airport Collapse Held due to heavy rainfall
According to Delhi International Airport limited the incident of roof collapse held due to heavy rainfall. “Due to heavy rain since early this morning, a portion of the canopy at the old Departure forecourt of Delhi Airport’s Terminal 1 collapsed around 5 am. There are injuries reported, and emergency personnel are working to provide all necessary assistance and medical aid to those affected.
As a result of this incident, all departures from Terminal 1 are temporarily suspended, and check-in counters are closed as a safety measure. We sincerely regret this disruption and apologize for any inconvenience caused.”
Because of the incident the Delhi Indira Gandhi International Airport has temporarily suspended all the departure from Terminal-1 till 2pm. The check-in counters of the area closed to the safety measures. Delhi airport on their social media said, “All departing and arriving flights from Terminal 3 and Terminal 2 are fully operational. Flights at Terminal 1 Arrivals are also operating. However, the departing flights from Terminal 1 are cancelled till 2 pm today.”
Delhi airport also said, “Indigo- All arrival and departure (planned for Terminal 1) are being distributed amongst Terminal 2 & Terminal 3. The real time coordination is being continued with airline officials and all concerned stakeholder on real time basis.”
Union Minster of Civil aviation said, “Personally monitoring the roof collapse incident at T1 Delhi Airport. First responders are working at site. Also advised the airlines to assist all affected passengers at T1. The injured have been evacuated to hospital. Rescue operations are still ongoing.”
