History on World Animal Day

World Animal Day has a rich and meaningful history. This traces its roots back to the early 20th century. This global event dedicated to raising awareness about animal welfare. Advocating for the rights and well being of animals has evolved into a significant worldwide celebration.
The idea for World Animal Day first took shape in 1925. When a Berlin-based animal protection organization known as the Heinrich Zimmermann Society had a vision. They believed the importance of recognizing and appreciating the contributions of animals to our lives and ecosystems. To turn this vision into reality, they organized the inaugural World Animal Day on March 24th during a convention of ecologists held in Florence, Italy.
However, it was in 1931 that the event took on its modern form. During the same convention in Florence it was decided to change the date of WorldAnimal Day to October 4th.
This date was significant beacuse the day coincided with St. Francis of Assisi’s feast day. St. Francis is known for his deep love and compassion for all living things. He was long regarded as the patron saint of animals and the environment.
The celebration of the Day began to spread across Europe and beyond. As various animal welfare organizations and compassionate individuals took up the cause. Over the years, it gained momentum and started to be celebrated globally.
In 2003, a significant milestone was achieved when World Animal Day received formal recognition from the United Nations. The Naturewatch Foundation, a UK-based animal protection organisation, initiated a push to have the United Nations formally recognise October 4th as World Animal Day.
Through its history, WorldAnimal Day has grown from a humble beginning into a global force for positive change. The day serves the reminder of the shared responsibility we have to care for and protect animals.

Over the years, The Day has been a great success. In Egypt, the day’s event had lead to additional clauses in the Egyptian constitution that offers right to the animals.
