About Mahatma Gandhi:

Mahatma Gandhi, whose birth name was Mohandas Karamchand Gandhi. He was born on October 2, 1869, in Porbandar, Gujarat, India. He emerged as a remarkable leader renowned for his philosophy of nonviolence (Ahimsa) and commitment to truth (Satya). Gandhi played a main role in India’s struggling for independence from British colonial rule.
Upon returning to India after studying law in England, Gandhi faced challenges in establishing a successful legal practice. He then accepted a job in South Africa. There he became a reknown advocate for the civil rights of the Indian community. He also experiencing and opposing racial discrimination.
In 1915, Gandhi returned to India, bringing with him the principles of nonviolent resistance developed during his time in South Africa. He swiftly became a leader in the Indian National Congress. He advocates for India’s independence from British colonial rule.
One of the most iconic moments in India’s struggle for independence was the Salt March in 1930, where Gandhi led a 240-mile march to the Arabian Sea to protest the British salt monopoly. His philosophy of nonviolent resistance played a vital role in India gaining independence on August 15, 1947.
Tragically, Gandhi’s life was assassinated on January 30, 1948, by Nathuram Godse. He was a Hindu nationalist who disagreed with Gandhi’s views on religious tolerance and nonviolence. Gandhi’s legacy lives on, continuing to inspire people worldwide. His birthday also observed as the International Day of Non-Violence in his honor.
