In a major development in the ongoing probe into the death of late singer Zubeen Garg, his former manager Tarsem Mittal appeared before the SIT of the Assam Police CID on Friday. The SIT is investigating the circumstances surrounding Garg’s death, which occurred on September 19 in Singapore.
According to sources, Mittal—who managed Zubeen’s professional affairs for a long period—was summoned by the SIT following allegations of misappropriation of the late artist’s funds. His name reportedly surfaced during interrogations of individuals associated with Garg’s management team.
Officials said Mittal had introduced Sharma, the prime accused in the case, to Garg’s management circle a few years ago. Sharma later replaced Mittal as the singer’s manager. The SIT is now examining Mittal’s financial transactions and his professional relationship with Sharma, who remains in judicial custody.
Investigators believe the close professional links between the two could shed light on possible financial irregularities that allegedly took place before Zubeen Garg’s untimely death.
The SIT has registered multiple charges, including murder, criminal conspiracy, culpable homicide not amounting to murder, and death due to negligence. A separate financial investigation is also underway. So far, seven people arrested, including Garg’s manager, his cousin (a police officer), the organiser of the Singapore event, two of his bandmates and two state police security personnel assigned to the singer.
SIT chief Munna Prasad Gupta earlier stated that the team would submit the chargesheet within the stipulated time. Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma said the final deadline is December 17, but the SIT may submit it by December 8 or 10.
Meanwhile, a statement from the Singapore Police dated October 17 mentioned that no foul play detected. The post-mortem report indicated death due to drowning. While authorities added that the case remains under investigation and a follow-up report could issued after 90 days.
