History of Teacher Day

Teacher Day marks the birth anniversary of Dr. Sarvepalli Radhakrishnan, who was the first vice president and second President of India.

Dr. Sarvepalli Radhakrishnan was a great philosopher, scholar and statesman who made a significant contribution to education, philosophy, and Indian society.

His books, like “Indian Philosophy” and “The Philosophy of the Upanishads,” are highly respected and remain important in the study of Indian thought.

He was born on 1888, September 5, in a small town called Tiruttani in Tamil Nadu. Radhakrishnan has began his career as a professor of philosophy.

When Dr. Sarvepalli Radhakrishnan became the President of India in 1962, his students wanted to celebrate his birthday. However, He suggested the students that instead of celebrating his birthday, it would be more meaningful if the day is dedicated to Teacher and celebrated as Teacher Day throughout the nation. From that time 5th September is celebrated as Teacher Day
