Silchar tension escalated on Sunday morning after an alleged cow slaughter incident in the Malugram area triggered unrest. The situation quickly turned sensitive. As a result, police rushed to the spot and increased security deployment.
According to local inputs, the incident surfaced around 6 a.m. Soon after, members of Bajrang Dal gathered at the site. They staged a protest and demanded immediate action. In particular, they asked for the arrest of those involved.
Protest Turns Tense, Police Step In
Meanwhile, police began a preliminary investigation. During this process, an auto-rickshaw driver was detained for questioning. However, the main accused could not be traced. This led to anger among some protesters.
Soon after, a section of the crowd allegedly assaulted the detained individual. Not only that, they reportedly took one of his relatives for questioning. At this point, the situation became volatile. Police had to intervene immediately. They rescued the individuals and restored temporary calm.
However, Silchar tension did not ease. Instead, it escalated again. A person at the spot allegedly raised religious slogans. This triggered another round of unrest. Protesters reportedly assaulted him as well. Consequently, authorities deployed additional police and paramilitary forces.
Ultimatum Issued, Area Remains Sensitive
At the same time, Bajrang Dal issued a 24-hour ultimatum. The organisation demanded strict enforcement of the Assam Cattle Preservation Act, 2021. They also warned of a larger agitation if no arrests are made within the given time.
Right now, the area remains tense. Security personnel are on high alert. Police are closely monitoring the situation to prevent further escalation.
Authorities are also investigating both the alleged cow slaughter and the incidents of violence. They aim to identify those responsible and take legal action.
