Silchar Man Swept away in Barak River during Idol Immersion, Missing

A man in Silchar, went missing after falling into the Barak River during Mansa Devi Idol Immersion on July 30, Wednesday evening.

According to reports, on Wednesday evening (July 30), three men accidentally slipped into the Barak River during the immersion of a Goddess Manasa idol at Sadarghat Bisharjan Ghat. While two of them were rescued, one man, Gauranga Ghosh, remains missing despite continuous search operations.

The incident happened during the idol immersion from the residence of Gauranga and Krishna Ghosh, residents of Second Link Road in Silchar. The brothers had gone to the ghat with their family and relatives.

According to eye witnessed, Krishna Ghosh accidentally slipped into the river while immersing puja articles. Seeing him in distress, Bipab Das, a relative who knew how to swim, jumped in to help. Moments later, Gauranga Ghosh, who reportedly could not swim, jumped in to save his younger brother. Unfortunately, he was swept away by the strong current and went missing.

A relative said, “The ghat was slippery due to soil. Krishna slipped during the immersing of puja articles. Bipab tried to help, and Gauranga panicked and jumped in too — but the river current swept him away.”

Rescue Operation is Going On to find Missing the Man of Silchar

The Riding Squad of Sadar Police, stationed at the ghat, responded swiftly. Officer Jamil Ahmed Mazumder used a cloth rope to pull out Krishna and Bipab safely. However, Gauranga could not be located.

The State Disaster Response Force (SDRF) was deployed, and rescue efforts continued late into the night.

Cachar SSP Numal Mahatta, who visited the site, said mechanised boats were being used for the search. “Every effort is being made to locate the missing man. We urge families to complete household idol immersions before sunset, so teams can respond swiftly in case of emergencies,” he added.

Rescue teams continue to search the river as Gauranga Ghosh’s family waits anxiously for updates.
