Shreyas Iyer Hospitalised in Sydney ICU After Rib Injury during IND Vs AUS ODI

Shreyas Iyer

Indian Cricketer Shreyas Iyer hospitalised in Sydney and admitted to the Intensive Care Unit (ICU) after sustaining internal bleeding from a rib injury during third ODI against Australia.

Iyer took a stunning catch while running backward from point to dismiss Alex Carey, butwhile taking the catch, he seemed to hurt his left rib cage. After returning to the dressing room, he experienced severe pain and was soon taken to the hospital for medical attention.

According to a report by PTI, Iyer has been under medical observation in the ICU for the past few days. Internal bleeding was detected in his rib cage, prompting doctors to admit him immediately.

Shreyas will remain under observation

“Shreyas has been in ICU for the past couple of days. After the reports came in, internal bleeding was detected, and he had to be admitted immediately. He will remain under observation for anywhere between two to seven days, as precautions are being taken to prevent infection,” a source close to the development told PTI.

The BCCI medical team responded promptly after Iyer showed signs of distress and instability upon returning to the dressing room. “The team doctor and physio didn’t take any chances and rushed him to the hospital. Things are stable now, though the situation was serious. He’s a tough guy and should recover soon,” the source added.

Initially, Iyer was expected to be sidelined for about three weeks, but the recovery timeline may now be extended. “Since there has been internal bleeding, he will certainly need more time to recover. It’s difficult at this stage to set a definite return date,” the source noted.

Iyer, who was named India’s vice-captain for the ODI series in Australia, had played a crucial half-century in Adelaide before suffering the injury. India eventually lost the series 1-2, despite a dominant win in the final ODI led by Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli.

Shreyas Iyer ’s Recent Injury and Career Setbacks

In recent years, Shreyas Iyer’s cricketing journey has been marred by multiple injuries. Earlier, a back issue forced him to withdraw from the Test series against England. Despite being declared fit by the NCA, he continued to struggle and opted out of a Ranji Trophy match, resulting in the loss of his central contract.

Following back surgery and months of rehabilitation, Iyer made a successful domestic cricket comeback and regained his spot in India’s ODI squad. However, recurring back spasms and stiffness have continued to trouble him.
