A carcass of a one-horned rhino was discovered on Wednesday in the Silghat area under Kaliabor subdivision of Assam’s Nagaon district, sparking concern among locals and wildlife authorities. The dead rhino was found near the Kaliabor Tea Estate, close to the foothills of the Kamakhya Temple in Silghat.
Preliminary reports suggest that the animal might have fallen prey to a tiger attack, though the exact cause of death will be confirmed after a post-mortem examination. Local residents reported that the rhino had strayed out of the Kaziranga National Park several days earlier and had been roaming around the tea garden region before its death.
Forest department officials have secured the site to prevent any interference with the carcass and launched an investigation into the incident. No signs of poaching or horn removal have been detected so far, but authorities are keeping all options open pending a detailed examination. Further updates from the Forest Department are awaited.
