Mother’s Day History:

The origin of Mother’s Day is linked to Anna Jarvis story. Long ago, there was a woman named Anna Jarvis who loved her mom very much. Anna Jarvis’s mother, also named Anna, had been a peace activist during the Civil War and helped wounded soldiers on both sides. In 1905, her mother passed away. After Anna Jarvis’s mother death, she wanted to find a way to honor her memory.

So, she thought there should be a special day to celebrate all mothers because they do so much for their families. She started campaigning for a national day to honor mothers. She also wrote letters to politicians, business leaders, and even presidents, asking them to make Mother’s Day an official holiday.

After years of hard work, Anna’s dream came true. In 1914, President Woodrow Wilson declared the second Sunday in May as Mother’s Day, making it an official holiday in the United States.
