Mahalaya 2024: Mahalaya remarks the beginning of Durga Puja, the biggest festival of Bengali community. It is also known as Mahalaya Amavashya which marks the end of Pitru Paksha and beginning of Devi Paksha.
This year Mahalaya will celebrate on October 2, 2024 and this date is the last date of Pitru Paksha. Mahalaya falls 7 days before Durga Puja.

Significance of Mahalaya
It is believed that on this day Goddess Durga begins her journey from her celestial abode to earth. Riding a lion, she descends to visit her devotees, with Lord Ganesh, Lord Karthik, Devi Saraswati and Devi Laksmi marking the beginning of the grand festivities that follow. This also day marks the beginning of the Durga Puja festivities in Hindu culture.
According to Hindu Mythology, Mahalaya marks the beginning of the Devi Paksha, the starting of Durga Puja. It is believed that on this day, Goddess Durga begins her journey from her heavenly abode to Earth, to defeat the demon Mahishasura and restore balance.
What is done in Mahalaya Day?
On Mahalaya people wake up early morning and went out for walk. People also listen Chandi path. Mahalaya is marked by the broadcast of traditional devotional programs, especially the recitation of “Mahishasura Mardini.” This program, broadcast on radio and television, narrates the story of Goddess Durga’s battle with Mahishasura and is an integral part of the celebrations. It serves to create an atmosphere of anticipation and devotion as the festival approaches.
On Mahalaya people also perform rituals to pay homage to their ancestors, known as Tarpan or Shraddha. These ceremonies include offering water, sesame seeds, and other items to the departed souls, reflecting respect and reverence.
One of the most ritual done in Mahalaya, it is Chokhu Daan, where the eyes of the Durga idol are painted or adorned. This ceremony symbolizes the awakening of the goddess and is crucial for the forthcoming Durga Puja celebrations. Every year the ritual conducted with great reverence, as it is believed to imbue the idol with divine presence and life.
