The LPG hike in Guwahati is now affecting the city’s food business. Restaurants and small eateries are under pressure. Costs have gone up sharply. As a result, many owners are thinking about increasing food prices soon.
The price of a 19 kg commercial cylinder has jumped to ₹3,293. This is a huge rise compared to last month. Because of this, kitchen expenses have increased overnight. Business owners say their profit margins are shrinking fast.
At the same time, smaller cylinders have also become costlier. The 5 kg cylinder now costs ₹869, up from ₹607. This adds more pressure, especially on small vendors. However, there is some relief for households. The domestic LPG cylinder price remains unchanged at ₹962 since March 2026.
Restaurant Owners Feel the Heat
Many restaurant owners are worried. They say it is becoming difficult to manage daily expenses. Prashanta Phukan, a local eatery owner, shared his concern. He said they may not raise prices immediately. However, gradual hikes seem unavoidable.
Moreover, the cost of other essentials is already high. So, the LPG hike has made things worse. If this continues, customers may soon have to pay more for their meals.
Another concern is the new LPG rules. Delivery now involves OTP verification. Also, waiting times have increased. This is creating inconvenience for businesses and consumers alike.
Experts link this sudden price rise to global tensions. Issues involving the US, Iran, and Israel have disrupted fuel supply. Consequently, prices have gone up across the country.
In the past year, domestic LPG prices have increased slowly. But commercial rates have fluctuated. This latest jump, however, is the steepest in recent months.
For now, restaurant owners are trying to absorb the cost. But if the trend continues, a price hike in food items looks inevitable.
