A suspected ATM Fraud case has come to light in Assam’s Hailakandi district after customers allegedly lost access to cash despite successful withdrawal transactions.

The incident was reported at an SBI ATM near the PHE office on Public School Road. Customers reportedly received messages confirming that money had been deducted from their bank accounts. However, the cash did not come out of the ATM’s dispensing slot. The unusual incident initially appeared to be a technical problem. As a result, some customers reportedly left the ATM without raising an alarm.

However, one customer became suspicious after completing a withdrawal without receiving the money. The customer checked the cash outlet and allegedly noticed an additional box fitted inside the dispensing area.

According to the complaint, the suspected setup may have caused the withdrawn cash to remain trapped inside the concealed box. This raised concerns that the ATM may have been deliberately modified to prevent customers from collecting their money.

Hidden Box Raises Questions

Following the discovery, the matter was reported to the police and bank authorities. Officials reached the ATM and began examining the machine. The suspected ATM Fraud has raised several questions. Who installed the additional box? How long had it been inside the machine? More importantly, how many customers may have been affected?

Authorities are now looking into the possibility of an organised fraud operation. CCTV footage from the ATM is also expected to play an important role in the investigation.

Meanwhile, officials are examining the machine and gathering information from customers who may have faced similar problems. The incident has also highlighted the need for customers to remain alert while using ATMs. If an account is debited but cash is not received, users should immediately inform their bank and report the matter to the authorities.

At present, the exact nature of the suspected fraud and the identity of those responsible have not been established. The investigation is continuing, and further details are awaited.
