Gold and Cash Seized from Cachar BEEO Madhab Saha House arrested in Bribery Case

Cachar

The Directorate of Vigilance and Anti-Corruption, Assam, on Tuesday (18 November 2025) arrested Madhab Saha, the Block Elementary Education Officer (BEEO) of Udharbond Block in Cachar district, after he was allegedly caught accepting a bribe during a sting operation.

During a subsequent search at his residence in Patharkandi, officials seized 444 grams of gold and ₹2,17,000 in cash, adding weight to the allegations of corruption. The operation was launched following complaints that Saha had demanded money to regularise a salary under the proposed budget.

According to the official press release, Saha initially demanded ₹10,000 from a complainant to process his salary, but the amount was later negotiated down to ₹7,000. Unwilling to pay the bribe, the complainant informed the Vigilance department, which then arranged a trap at the BEEO office in Udharbond.

On 18 November, officials apprehended Saha red-handed inside his office chamber moments after he accepted the bribe. The tainted currency notes were recovered in the presence of independent witnesses before he was formally arrested.

The Directorate confirmed the arrest on X (formerly Twitter), stating:
“Today @DIR_VAC_ASSAM trapped red-handed Madhab Saha, Block Elementary Education Officer, Udharbond Block, for accepting a bribe from a complainant for regularizing his salary.”

A case has been registered at the Anti-Corruption Branch Police Station under ACB P.S. Case No. 61/2025 dated 18/11/2025, invoking Section 7(a) of the Prevention of Corruption Act, 1988 (as amended in 2018). Authorities said that further investigation is currently in progress.
