Dhemaji Court Sentenced Rintu Sharma to Death for 2021 Murder of Nandita Saikia

Today (August 21) Dhemaji District and Session Court has sentenced a murderer Rintu Sharma to death for brutally murder of college student Nandita Saikia in 2021.

Nandita Saikia was a student of Moridhal College in Demaji, who was murdered on August 21, 2021. According to reports, Rintu Sharma, a Class IV employee at the same college attacked Nandita with Sharp weapon in broad day light near the ASTC bus stand in Dhemaji.

The attack left Nandita critically injured, and despite being shifted to Brahmaputra Nursing Home in Dibrugarh, she succumbed to her injuries on August 25, 2021. The incident also grievously injured Nandita’s classmate Kashmina Dutta and Kashmina’s father Deba Dutta, who were also targeted by the assailant.

The case, registered at Dhemaji Police Station (Case No. 397/2021), saw an extensive four-year-long trial. Police had earlier submitted a 400-page chargesheet against Rintu Sharma. Over the course of the hearings, 141 witnesses and examining the evidence by the court on August 20, 2025, Judge Kalyanjit Saikia convicted Rintu under multiple sections of the Indian Penal Code (IPC), including Sections 341 (wrongful restraint), 326 (causing grievous hurt), 307 (attempt to murder), and 302 (murder).

On Thursday, the Sessions Court verdict the death sentence of murderer Rintu Sharma of Nandita Saikia murder, marking the end of a prolonged fight for justice.
