At least 11 people were killed and 20 others injured when a MEMU (mainline electric multiple unit) local train rammed into a stationary goods train and cause train accident near Bilaspur railway station in Chhattisgarh on Tuesday at around 4 pm. The tragic collision occurred on the Bilaspur–Katni section, causing the derailment of multiple coaches and halting rail traffic on the busy route.
According to officials, a preliminary investigation suggests that the MEMU train overshot a signal and crashed into the rear of the goods train. The impact was massive, severely damaging the overhead electric wires and the signalling system, leading to further disruption in train services.
Chhattisgarh Train Accident: Rescue and Relief Operations
Soon after the accident, railway rescue teams, RPF personnel, and local police rushed to the spot to carry out relief and evacuation efforts. Emergency medical teams provided immediate assistance to the injured passengers, while senior railway officials reached the site to oversee rescue operations.
CM Expresses Grief, Railways Announces Compensation
Expressing deep sorrow over the incident, Chhattisgarh Chief Minister Vishnu Deo Sai termed the accident “extremely tragic.” He posted on X, “I have spoken to the Bilaspur District Collector and directed immediate relief and assistance. The state government stands firmly with the affected families.”
The Railway Ministry has announced an ex gratia compensation of ₹10 lakh for the families of those killed, ₹5 lakh for those seriously injured, and ₹1 lakh for passengers with minor injuries. A detailed inquiry into the cause of the collision will be conducted by the Commissioner of Railway Safety (CRS).
