The Directorate of Vigilance and Anti-Corruption, Assam, arrested a government official from Udharbond in Cachar on Tuesday (18 November 2025) for allegedly accepting a bribe from a complainant in exchange for regularising his salary. The accused, Madhab Saha, serving as Block Elementary Education Officer (BEEO) of Udharbond Block, was reportedly caught red-handed with Rs. 7,000 inside his office chamber.
According to an official press release, Saha had initially demanded Rs. 10,000 as a bribe to process the complainant’s salary under the proposed budget. After negotiation, the amount lowered to Rs. 7,000. The complainant, unwilling to pay the bribe, approached the Vigilance department for legal intervention.
Acting on the complaint, officials laid a trap on 18 November at the BEEO office in Udharbond. Saha was apprehended moments after accepting the bribe money. The tainted currency notes were recovered and seized in front of independent witnesses. After verifying the evidence, officials arrested the BEEO on the spot.
The Directorate also shared details of the operation on X (formerly Twitter), stating: “Today @DIR_VAC_ASSAM trapped red-handed Madhab Saha, Block Elementary Education Officer, Udharbond Block, for accepting a bribe from a complainant for regularizing his salary.”
A case has been registered at the Anti-Corruption Branch Police Station under ACB P.S. Case No. 61/2025 dated 18/11/2025 under Section 7(a) of the Prevention of Corruption Act, 1988 (as amended in 2018). Further investigation is underway.
