Bhangarpar Bridge Collapse: 5 Arrested, Alternative Routes Open, New Bridge in 15 Days

Bhangarpar Bridge Collapse

Five individuals arrested in connection with the collapse of the Harang River bridge at Bhangarpar on the Silchar-Kalain Road. The incident occurred around 2 AM on June 18 when two overloaded limestone trucks were crossing the structure, leading to its failure and triggering widespread concern across the Barak Valley.

Who Has Been Arrested?

Cachar Police have arrested five weighbridge staffers:

Additionally, three police personnel—including an Assistant Sub-Inspector—have been sent to “Reserve Close”, a disciplinary holding pending inquiry.

Swift Government Response and Road Connectivity Update

In a press briefing, Cachar Deputy Commissioner Mridul Yadav confirmed that Barak Valley is not cut off. Alternative routes via Rajnagar and TRK are open to both passenger and commercial vehicles (up to 10 tonnes). Over 200 vehicles successfully passed through by Wednesday evening.

“There’s only a marginal increase of 2 to 3 kilometres in travel distance,” said DC Yadav, urging the public not to spread or believe in misinformation.

New Pre-Fabricated Bridge Ordered

To restore full connectivity, the National Highways and Infrastructure Development Corporation Limited (NHIDCL) has placed an order for a 40-metre pre-fabricated bridge from Ranchi. It is expected to arrive in five days and be fully assembled within ten, restoring normal traffic movement within 15 days.

Rescue, Relief and River-Crossing Support

Teams from the NDRF, SDRF, and an army boat have been deployed to assist locals, particularly students, in crossing the river. This service is being provided free of cost.

No Threat of Food Shortage

In response to concerns about a possible food crisis, officials assured that the Barak Valley has enough stock to last over two months.

“There is no food shortage. Life in Barak Valley is normal,” said SP Numal Mahatta.

Multiple Investigations Launched on Bhangarpar Bridge Collapse

An official inquiry is underway to determine:

Both DC Yadav and SP Mahatta confirmed that departmental action will be taken against anyone found responsible for negligence.

Transport to Shillong, Kalain, Katigorah Remains Open
