Assam Organ Transplant Racket Busted in Nagaon, Three Arrested

Assam Organ Transplant Racket Busted

Assam Police busted an organ transplant racket operating in Nagaon district, leading to the arrest of three key members allegedly involved in the illegal kidney trade.

According to Nagaon Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) Swapnali Das, the operation conducted after weeks of surveillance on the gang, which had been active in the region for several years.

Police identified and arrested three accused — Dharani Das alias Bogumula, Mahendra Das, and Deep Das alias Dopy — for their involvement in smuggling kidneys through a local brokerage network. Investigators also revealed that two more individuals, Hazrika from Baihata Chariali (Kamrup) and Daluapgu from Guwahati, suspected to be linked to the racket and currently under investigation.

Illegal Kidney Trade Targeted Poor Families

As per reports, the illegal kidney trade thrived in a village near Nagaon, where economically distressed families lured by brokers into selling their kidneys. Local residents claimed that poverty and alcoholism made the victims easy targets.

“We have several families where three out of five members have already sold their kidneys,” said a villager, adding that the racket had been active for years.

Victims allegedly sent to Kolkata by middlemen who promised ₹3–3.5 lakh per kidney, but most received only a fraction of the promised money after deductions by brokers.

Police Probe Links to Previous Cases

Police sources indicated that the same network had booked in 2021 for similar offences. Authorities are now investigating possible interstate connections and other members involved in the organ trafficking syndicate.

The SSP confirmed that further investigations are underway to uncover the full scale of the racket and ensure strict legal action against all those involved.
