Assam Earthquake: 4.8 Magnitude Tremor Shakes Barak Valley, Epicenter Hailakandi, Felt in Tripura

A 4.8 magnitude Assam earthquake struck near the epicentre in Hailakandi on Tuesday afternoon. The tremor hit at 2:18:31 PM IST on April 7, 2026.

According to official data, the quake originated at latitude 24.823°N and longitude 92.634°E. It occurred at a shallow depth of 5 km, making the shaking more noticeable across nearby areas.

Soon after the tremor, people rushed out of homes, shops, and offices. The shaking lasted only a few seconds. Still, it caused brief panic among residents. However, the situation returned to normal quickly.

Tremors Reach Tripura

The impact was not limited to Assam. Tremors were also felt in Dharmanagar and nearby areas of Tripura. This shows how shallow earthquakes can affect a wider region.
