The Criminal Investigation Department (CID) of Assam has intensified its probe into the Veer Lachit Sena, arresting five key leaders from Cyber Police Station.
CID will interrogate ten Veer Lachit Sena Leaders, who are initially at CID lockup, in connection with extortion and kidnapping cases.
Among those arrested are prominent Veer Lachit Sena leaders — Rontu Pani Phukan, Bikash Axom, Tanmay Chetia, Utpal Dutta, Biraj Ballabh, Riaz Ahmed, Mohan Ali, Chinmoy Dev, Bishwajit Doley, and Inamul Haque. The accused were apprehended during coordinated operations across several districts of Assam and subsequently produced before the court, which remanded them to five days’ custody.
Officials confirmed that the CID plans to interrogate all ten accused as part of its ongoing investigation into the outfit’s alleged criminal activities. The arrests come as part of a larger operation launched by the Assam CID after a fresh case (No. 20/25) was registered against the Veer Lachit Sena at the CID Police Station on Thursday.
Following the registration of the case, the CID began consolidating all FIRs filed against the group across various police stations in Assam to streamline the probe. Swiftly acting on the intelligence gathered, the CID conducted multiple raids across districts, resulting in the arrest of at least 11 members linked to the organisation.
Sources said the investigation marks a significant escalation in the state government’s crackdown on the Veer Lachit Sena — a regional organisation known for its recent protests and confrontations with authorities. Officials further indicated that more members of the group are likely to be questioned in the coming days as the CID expands its inquiry into the outfit’s network and operations across Assam.
