Assam Cabinet Appoint 5 Special Prosecutors in Zubeen Garg Death Case

Assam Cabinet on January 9, has appoint 5-team member of Special Prosecutors to conduct the trial of Zubeen Garg Death Case, in aims to fast track proceedings.

Yesterday, January 9, CM Himanta Biswa Sarma said the dedicated prosecution team has been formed to “take forward the legal battle” effectively.

Senior advocate Ziaul Kamar will lead the team as Special Public Prosecutor, while Brojendra Mohan Choudhury will serve as Additional Public Prosecutor. The panel also includes Kishore Dutta, Pranjal Dutta, and Bikash Jamar as Assistant Public Prosecutors. Sarma said the five-member team would ensure a focused and efficient legal process.

Garrima Saikia Garg stated after the decision taken by the CM, “Today the team of Public Prosecutor has been announced.”

Hopefully, with your full effort you will fight and give the demons the toughest punishment in the world. In addition, the Cabinet sanctioned a Rs 5 crore grant for the proposed trust in Zubeen Garg’s name, initiated by the singer’s family. The Chief Minister said the government supports the family’s efforts and will extend further assistance once detailed plans to preserve Garg’s legacy are shared.

Background: Zubeen Garg ’s Death in Singapore and SIT Probe

Zubeen Garg, 52, died on September 19 in Singapore while swimming in the sea after travelling for the North East India Festival. A SIT under the CID has been probing the incident and filed its charge sheet on December 12.

The SIT charged festival organiser Shyamkanu Mahanta, the singer’s secretary Siddhartha Sharma and band members Shekharjyoti Goswami and Amritprava Mahanta with murder. A fifth accused, Sandipan Garg, a suspended police officer and cousin of the late singer, charged with culpable homicide not amounting to murder. Two personal security officers, Nandeswar Bora and Prabin Baishya, face charges of criminal conspiracy and criminal breach of trust for alleged misappropriation of funds.

The case is currently being heard by the Kamrup (Metro) District and Sessions Court, with the next hearing scheduled for January 17.
